TALLINN — In a move that has left Estonians scratching their heads and simultaneously sweating, the government unveiled its latest initiative to comply with GDPR regulations: mandatory ‘Privacy Saunas’ designed to teach data protection through the ancient art of sauna etiquette.
A Proposal Rooted in Tradition
Inspired by the concept of e-Residency, the initiative proposes that every citizen must partake in an hour-long sauna session, where they will be instructed on proper online privacy measures. Kadri, a government spokesperson, explained that the sauna setting helps residents to relax and ultimately understand the importance of safeguarding their personal information.
”Nothing says ‘data protection’ like sweating inside a wooden box while discussing cookies—digital, that is,”
Experts assert that the steamy atmosphere will lower the barriers of directness that many Estonians are known for, making citizens more comfortable asking tough questions about their data.
Privacy Training Now Hotter Than Ever
The training sessions will include essential sauna etiquette. Participants will learn to share their data privacy concerns while remaining respectful to their fellow sauna-mates. Aivo, an IT consultant, believes mixing digital privacy with traditional sauna practices is a brilliant twist. “If I’m going to sit in my underwear and talk about Google tracking my every move, at least I’ll be sweaty doing it,” he said.
The government plans to facilitate these sessions at local saunas, as well as in pop-up sauna tents across major cities—because what better way to prevent data leaks than to get comfortable with your leib during a long sauna session?

Sauna-goers Will Now Need to Bring Their Own Data Protection Tools
Liisa, a frequent sauna-goer, expressed her skepticism, stating, “I’m not sure how I’m supposed to discuss a data breach while trying to figure out the right technique to pour water on the stones. Do I bring my laptop?” Critics argue that educators may struggle to communicate the GDPR rights when everyone is dangerously close to passing out from the heat.
”If privacy means I get to touch a hot stone and feel important at the same time, then sign me up!”
A New Era of E-Government and E-Sauna
Proponents of Privacy Saunas believe this new frontier of data protection will revolutionize how Estonians interact with both their government and their own sense of privacy. Aivo has already suggested a concept of ‘e-Sauna’ where citizens can virtually join a sauna session and engage in discussions via video stream while wearing their best sauna hats.
As this bizarre policy rolls out, tensions rise between traditionalists clinging to their beloved sauna customs and digital-age enthusiasts eager to see data protection materialize in every steamy corner of the country.
Is It Even Legal?
While the legality of this program is still under debate, the government insists that as long as no one gets burned—physically or digitally—they are in the clear. Peeter, a concerned citizen, called for more transparency. “I just want to know if we’re getting a towel for the session or if we need to bring our own. Why does everything have to be a surprise?”
Time will tell whether this initiative is a landmark victory for data rights or another hot mess to add to Estonia’s already colorful history.
At press time, sauna supplies were reportedly running low as citizens rushed to buy privacy towels and their own personal ice bath.
