TALLINN — In a stunning development that is certain to live in infamy, Minister of Culture Mart Rüütel mistakenly labeled pizza as the “top national food” during a press conference held to celebrate traditional Estonian dishes. The slip-up has sparked outrage among leib purists.

”Everyone knows leib is the true king of our cuisine. Yet here we are, debating toppings instead of rye. This is madness!” said angry townsperson Jüri Kalev, shaking a loaf of black bread in disbelief.

”Pizza has its place, but we have survived on this bread for generations! Why jump into the deep end with crust when we have centuries of leib history?”

Despite the minister’s attempt to clarify his statement, saying that pizza was merely a “modern* favorite”, several Estonians have taken to Facebook to declare pizza a “foreign invader” that threatens the very fabric of the country.

”I admire our ability to embrace new foods, but let’s not forget our roots,” added Tiit, a long-time leib enthusiast. “Soon they’ll be saying burger is the real Estonian cuisine! It’s simply unacceptable!”

In 2021, Estonia was named the EU nation least likely to put pineapple on pizza, proving that not all culinary changes are welcome.

At press time, the Minister was seen urgently consulting a history book on Estonian food, while organizers of the next Laulupidu considered providing only traditional dishes to avoid further governmental mishaps.
