TALLINN — A determined 38-year-old woman named Marit has won an unofficial battle against the potent odor of her neighbors’ trash after five days of silence.
Marit, who resides in Kalamaja, first noticed the smell while enjoying her evening kohv and watching a reality show about sauna etiquette. Shockingly, the aroma was so strong that she could even taste it with her leib. This was unacceptable.
Instead of confronting her neighbors directly, Marit decided to employ a traditional Estonian strategy: stoic silence. “I figured they would get the hint,” she explained, armed with her trusty mop. “You know, we like to keep things direct; I just wouldn’t say a word.”
Five days later, victory was declared when Marit could finally breathe fresh air again. “No one spoke, but I’m convinced they were silently respecting the trash battle,” she stated. “In Estonia, that’s a win. My sauna remains sacred!”
Neighbors have reported a slight decline in trash scent, and many claim to have felt the “unity of quiet” and “silent solidarity” surrounding the issue. One neighbor, Juri, said, “We didn’t know we were at war until we were. Now we need to have a parade for Marit.”
At press time, Marit was preparing a flag to commemorate her victory and planning a group sauna session to reinforce community ties through restorative silence.
