TALLINN — A local man has achieved international status after making the bold decision to order groceries in English at the local Rimi supermarket.
Mart, 32, who had previously limited his language skills to ‘kohv’ and ‘leib’, approached the cashier with a list scrawled in his best handwriting. He confidently muttered, ‘Can I get pizza?’ with all the bravado of a seasoned diplomat.
However, things took a turn when the cashier, a seasoned Tallinn native, stared blankly at him. ‘Pizza? No, we have only leib,’ she replied deadpan. Unfazed, Mart attempted to elaborate, causing a small gathering of curious shoppers to take interest.
“I thought I could make them understand. I showed them a photo of pizza on my phone,” Mart recalled. “But they just nodded and smiled like I was asking about the weather.”
As Mart’s attempts at communication continued, he soon found himself unintentionally leading an impromptu workshop on pizza toppings, which surprised him more than anyone else in the aisle.
