TALLINN — The Bank of Estonia has announced a new 2 euro coin featuring Sipsik, a character unknown to 95% of the population, igniting a heated debate on who exactly this Sipsik is.

”We believe Sipsik represents our rich cultural heritage,” said Kristiina Hujaiset, spokesperson for the Bank. “But honestly? We just thought it would look cute on our money.”

The general response has been bewilderment. Local resident Jaan, 51, voiced his frustration: “I don’t care about Sipsik. I just want a coin that doesn’t remind me of my childhood loneliness in the sauna!”

Meanwhile, social media is buzzing. Under the hashtag #WhoIsSipsik, Estonians express their bewilderment with memes, showing confused faces, cats, and children holding what appears to be a random piece of leib instead of the new coin.

“I thought it was a fancy new way to say ‘sip’ coffee. Turns out I was wrong.”

Critics point out the potential risks of popularizing a character that nobody knows. “What if this encourages a generation to explore unknown things?” asked Aivo. “We already have enough trouble with tourists thinking they can just walk into a sauna without an invitation!”

As the release date approaches, currency collectors rub their hands together in excitement. “It’s the perfect opportunity to sell it for 20 euros to clueless expats who just want a piece of ‘traditional’ Estonia for their collection!” said avid collector Tiit, flashing his largest stash of rare coins.

At press time, the Bank of Estonia announced that more coins, featuring other unknown characters like ‘Paks Eik’ and ‘Täht Dombais’, are already in the design phase.
