TALLINN — A local man, Mart Kask, boldly proclaimed he could see the distant shores of Finland from his balcony, despite being several hundred kilometers away and facing directly into the city.
Eyewitnesses report that Mart was enthusiastically using a pair of antique binoculars he bought at a flea market, which turned out to be more suited for birdwatching than maritime navigation.
”You can clearly see the waves and maybe even a fishing boat or two!”
Mart claims that, with proper focus and dedication, he could become a leading maritime expert. “It all comes down to the angle of the sun and the will to believe in what you see!” he stated, while simultaneously trying to convince his neighbors that this new perspective would enhance their own views.
Local geographer, Juri Leht, burst his bubble, saying, “With enough imagination, you could claim you’re seeing anything. But perhaps Mart can start a trend in virtual travel… from his living room. Who needs a ferry when you have optimism?”
Residents of Kalamaja plan to set up a navigation society based on Mart’s techniques, promising that their first meeting will be held under the constant watch of a very confused seagull.
At press time, Mart was seen setting up a display for “Finland Sightings” in his window, using cardboard cutouts of famous landmarks for authenticity.
