TALLINN — In a startling turn of events, local resident Mart Laht has unknowingly assumed the presidency of Estonia after mistakenly clicking the wrong button in the e-Government portal. Mart, a 34-year-old IT specialist, thought he was reserving a sauna time but instead found himself with an official email reading ‘Congratulations, Mr. President!’
”I just wanted to pay my taxes and book a spot at my favorite sauna!” said Mart, who was still wearing his bathrobe when he realized the gravity of his mistake. “Now I’m dealing with all these state issues. I thought the worst thing I’d have to manage was the temperature of the sauna. Turns out, it’s the economy instead!”
From Saunas to Summits
Since his unexpected inauguration, Mart has tried his best to steer the country. He’s decided to incorporate more sauna breaks into the parliamentary calendar—much to the delight of other MPs. “Who knew, as president, I could just declare Wednesdays ‘Sauna Day’?” he chuckled. “We’re nearly back to full productivity!”
“It’s the most democratic thing to do! Lapland once proposed ‘Sauna as a Service.’ I’m just adding ‘Executive Sauna’ to that.”
Mart’s presidency has also resulted in some cultural highlights. The next national song festival is now themed ‘Kohv and Kuningas,’ exemplifying a delightful coffee-and-kings metaphoric connection, which has surprisingly gained traction among the youth.
When asked about policy changes, Mart stated that he intends to avoid complex reforms, instead favoring simpler methods: “I plan on instituting ‘Noodlevorm,’ a nationwide noodle dish competition to stimulate economic growth and love for cuisine.”
While experts in political science watch with intrigue, fellow citizens seem amused yet supportive of their new leader. Reports of Uber rides to ‘meet the people’ came in, with Mart consistently ordering a leib sandwich for all. “He’s keeping it real!” said one supporter after a very productive meeting at the local Rimi.
As Mart continues to adjust to his high-profile position, he assures the public, “I may have clicked here by accident, but my heart is in the right place—just like my e-Residency!”
At press time, Mart accidentally scheduled a summit with Boris Johnson for a weekend sauna retreat.
