TALLINN — Marit Kask, a local woman who only wanted to order a coffee, accidentally became an e-Estonian after connecting to a Wi-Fi network for just ten minutes.

According to Marit, she logged onto the public Wi-Fi at her favorite cafe, Cafe Murman, to check her email. Instead, she emerged with a full portfolio of digital documents and a newfound identity. “I thought I was just ordering a flat white, not a government-issued ID!” she explained.

”When I realized I was officially an e-resident, I thought it was just another coffee promo. Do I get a free cup now?”

While many are excited about the prospect of establishing foreign businesses or paying taxes online, Marit is mostly concerned with integrating her new identity into her current Estonian lifestyle. “Does this mean I can reserve sauna time online?” she pondered.

Experts speculate that the phenomenon may not be unique to Marit. E-residency continues to draw in baffled expats, who often mistake it for an elaborately confusing loyalty program.

At press time, Marit was still waiting for her first e-residency kohv to arrive.
